Undead Living is a post-punk goth duo comprised of Avery Deering and Harrison Reed. We've been writing music since 2022 and recorded and produced their self-titled debut EP with Civil Audio Producer, Michael Briggs in the Summer of 2025. We draw inspiration from The Smiths, Blondie, Killing Joke, and Depeche Mode.
OUR PROCESS
We approach music by focusing on interplay and groove, starting with a bass or guitar hook and building around verses before developing choruses, breakdowns, and intros or outros. Our songs evolve over months of practice with simple drum machine loops, experimenting with multiple melodies and directions before refining them into the simplest, catchiest riffs.
Lyrics come last, crafted while driving for hours on repeat to test cadence and syllable count, creating hooks that stick while exploring vocal range. Both of us play guitar and bass, deliberately tuning differently to keep our parts distinct and allow the instruments to "talk to each other."
Recording follows a similar approach, layering drums, guitars, bass, and modular synths before adding vocals, ensuring each song works sonically as an instrumental while maintaining a live energy.
INFLUENCES & THEMES
Our sound and themes are shaped by goth, 80s new wave, the Madchester Movement, and a wide range of influences from Radiohead, The Smiths, Deftones, and Depeche Mode to Jamiroquai and Frou Frou.
Lyrically, we focus on human relationships, coming of age experiences, and mental health, aiming to create music that connects, provides escape, and lives in the moment. Our personal backgrounds inform our process. Avery grew up in Fort Worth surrounded by music, while Harrison spent much of his childhood overseas, always seeking connection through sound. Together, we combine technical rigor, emotional honesty, and a love for groove to create songs that are memorable, accessible, and uniquely ours.
